Simplifying the home

Yesterday I acknowledged the 31st anniversary of my father's passing, which is always a sobering reminder of life and priorities. Thankfully, time heals slowly, and through the years, I have learned healthier ways to cope with grief or other hardship. There were storms outside, and my eye gravitated to my kitchen cabinets that have needed reorganizing, and even parting with some of the glassware in the process. Naturally, that came with some hesitation throughout the years because this glassware has been in the family.

With that being said, I have reached the point where simplifying the home has been part of my process for personalizing and uplifting my living space. I still have, and always will have certain works of art and furniture that has been bestowed to me. Letting go of certain things to make my home my own to suit my needs is both an unsettling and healing process. Life was different when my parents were young professionals. Large soirees were popular. There was often special chinaware, silverware, glassware, and even cocktail glasses for these special occasions. There were copious amounts of small punch glasses, Tom Collins glasses, brandy snifters, and 4 different sizes of wine glasses. Oh yeah, and these tiny flutes used for cordials.

I believe in having what I need to properly host my guests, but this level of conformity and convention is completely lost on me. Perhaps because we are different people, and living in different times. I kept the wine glasses and am giving some of the items that don't serve a practical purpose for me to my sister and a good friend who will appreciate them.

The same could be said for furniture or artwork. What worked in a different era in someone else's home doesn't necessarily fit your needs. I can't be much help with the furniture. However, if you enjoy texture and grit, curves, light, and shadow; I can help with your wall art needs, as it fits into your home decor. Sometimes simplifying the home is needed so it can be personalized to you. If you'd like a consultation / start a conversation, you know where to find me. Be free, and don't be bound to convention. Personalize in a way that fits you; your unique self.
